Job Description

The Memory Care Unit Manager requires experience working with residents with dementia in a skilled or acute care setting. The Manager is responsible to assist with planning, organizing, and implementing the dementia program for the unit along with Life Enrichment.


This position reports to the Director of Clinical Services and will be expected to complete a certified dementia training in the first year.

  • Communicates with other department supervisors, staff, residents, responsible parties and families to coordinate care of residents.
  • Attends care conferences as scheduled for residents on unit.
  • Monitors daily functioning of the unit to ensure continuity of, and appropriate changes in, the program.
  • Assesses the educational needs of unit staff regarding dementia specific knowledge, behavior management, communication skills, and strategies to support patient function and knowledge of the program.
  • Works with the Staff Development Nurse to provide appropriate training to staff
  • Works to achieve personal advancement and education.
  • Promotes and maintains good relations with employees, residents, responsible parties, families and visitors.
  • Understands and promotes all policies regarding residents’ rights.
  • Attends in-service as required by state and federal regulations. Maintains an awareness and knowledge of nursing best practices and trends and Federal and State regulatory issues related to the RAI process.
  • Accepts nursing on call responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Develops relationships with resident families

  • Makes daily rounds to connect with staff and residents.
  • Keeps current on changes in the industry, including clinical and regulatory changes.
  • Exemplifies department dress code and has a presentable, professional and well- organized office that is conducive to meeting comfortably with staff and visitors at any time.
  • Complies with established Infection Control and Safety Guidelines.
  • Actively listens to residents, family members and staff to determine their needs and does everything possible to meet those needs in a caring, understanding way.
  • Demonstrates initiative by assessing, observing, and responding to assist residents, guests and co-workers. Answers any call light, Responds to any resident who has needs. Addresses residents by their preferred name.
  • Promotes team work in Nursing Department campus wide.


Job Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing.
  • RN degree
  • 3 years working with residents with dementia and behavior management
  • General Knowledge of Supervisory Principles and Practice in the state of Connecticut
