Job Description

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) has 24-hr accountability and supports the Director of Clinical Services with the delivery of efficient and effective nursing care while achieving positive outcomes. Although, this is an administrative position at times you may have to participate in direct patient care and round frequently on the neighborhoods. 

The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for Infection Prevention and Staff Development. The ADON will collaborate with the Medical Director on the facility Antimicrobial Stewardship program and will be accountable for decreasing the incidence and transmission of infectious diseases between patients/residents/ staff/visitors. Through strategic planning, leadership and consultation the ADON will lead the nursing team in the identification and implementation of infection prevention goals and objectives throughout the facility.

The ADON assesses the educational needs of Duncaster across the continuum, including participating in monthly general orientation.  As a leader you are expected to identify training needs and implement training programs to meet those needs. The position is responsible for ensuring residents and patients receive care from health service staff that is oriented, trained and educated to perform their duties in compliance with the Public Health Code and Duncaster policies.

In the absence of the DCS, the ADON assumes the duties and responsibilities of the DCS.  This position is responsible for the clinical operations of Caleb Hitchcock and will have on-call responsibility.

  • Provides leadership and guidance and assumes a leadership role to the nursing department in order to provide excellent service to our residents.
  • Must be able to execute the details of planning an in-service training program and to present the subject matter effectively.
  • Ability to relate to and motivate all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrates success in creating an interdisciplinary educational program.
  • Good verbal and communication skills with the ability to demonstrate organizational and educational skills.
  • Conducts unannounced environmental surveillance rounds in the Caleb Hitchcock Health Care Center, and the Caleb kitchen for the purpose of maintaining sanitary and preventative procedures and practices. Deficiencies found are to be reported immediately on the prescribed form to the Administrator, the Service Director directly responsible, the Director of Medical Services and the Director of Clinical Services. Close follow up is maintained to assure immediate action is taken to correct the deficiency.
  • Regular visits to the nursing units for the purpose of collecting data and following up on infections. Reviews all infection reports in Matrixcare and resident specific culture and sensitivity reports.
  • Maintains on on-going record of all resident specific infections, including course of and responses to treatment. Such reports are presented to the Medical Advisory Board and ICC quarterly meetings for the purpose of determining rates of infection, causative organisms, appropriate antibiotic use, evaluation of treatment and determining prevention measures. Reports monthly on NHSN.
  • Monitors patterns of infection to determine when an outbreak occurs. Carefully analyzes data to determine source of problem and identify remedial preventative systems and standards.
  • Provides oversight to Employee Health Program to include annual PPD surveys, administering and tracking employee annual influenza immunizations for all employees.
  • Tracks residents immunizations to ensure up to date
  • In coordination with the Administrator, Medical Director and the Director for Clinical Services, assures that reportable diseases and outbreaks are reported and properly followed up with the State and local health departments.
  • Consults with an Infectious Disease specialist as appropriate regarding infection control standards and practices.
  • Collaborates with nursing supervisors to assure proper techniques related to infection control are observed by all staff to include direct observation of staff performance.
  • Fosters a strong partnership between medical staff and the department of nursing.
  • Promotes a culture of safety to ensure healthy practice and living environment
  • Participates in meetings to address patient/resident care, survey and/or standards of care issues
  • Assists Director of Clinical Services in reviewing prospective admissions in relation to existing nursing capabilities and ensure readiness to treat.
  • Promotes professional development and career opportunities for nursing staff.
  • Responsibly delegates work and follows through to see that assignments are accomplished and desired results are obtained (i.e. care planning).
  • Active member of QAPI committee and leader of a PIP
  • Other duties as directed by the DCS



Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Specialty Training in Infection Prevention and Control
  • 3 years management experience
  • Geriatric/rehabilitation experience and orientation
  • Connecticut RN license
  • Thorough knowledge of State and Federal regulated standards of practice
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills with the ability to demonstrate organizational and education skills.
  • Strong proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook
