Job Description

Duncaster, a premier Life Plan Community located in Bloomfield, CT is currently seeking a Controller to join our leadership team.  This position reports to the Vice President – Finance and will be responsible for leading the financial accounting function with management responsibility for the Senior Accountant, Medical Biller, and Resident Biller/Accounts Payable Clerk.

  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements
  • Reviews all departmental financial reporting and variance explanations
  • Works with VP-Finance to calculate/develop and report benchmark information to department heads and the Board
  • Prepares quarterly ratios and other continuing disclosure required under financing documents as assigned by VP-Finance
  • Reviews all monthly journal entries
  • Responsible for ensuring accuracy of the general ledger including the fixed asset sub-ledger.
  • Coordinates preparation of all information/data for the Medicare Cost Report and acts as liaison with the outside consultant to ensure the filing deadline is met.
  • Serve as liaison with external auditors and assist with preparation of work papers
  • Serve as liaison with the actuarial consultants
  • Initiates daily/monthly bank transfers in/out of the operating account
  • Makes all bank deposits, electronic and in-person
  • Completes bank account reconciliations
  • Assists the Accountant with the preparation of the IRS 990s for Duncaster Inc. and the Duncaster Foundation and reviews them for accuracy. 
  • Assists with the development of the annual budget
  • Ensure accurate census is maintained and reported
  • Prepares annual cost and revenue allocation between Duncaster’s various levels of care/business lines
  • Manages accounts receivable aging and oversees collection of delinquent accounts, both from private and third party pay sources.
  • Oversees/authorizes departmental supply purchases
  • Provide direction and assistance to other organizational departments regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures and efficient control and utilization of financial resources.
  • Lead staff training and development in budgeting and financial management areas.
  • Assists with forecasts and projections as assigned by VP-Finance
  • Acts as backup for VP-Finance when he/she is not available


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 7 years of finance experience and at least 2 years managing others
  • Basic working knowledge of 3rd party billing
  • Experience in preparing financial statements
  • Good computer skills and high comfort level with learning new systems
  • Good analytical skills and basic financial planning
